David A. Axelrod joined Coplan + Crane in 2024 as an Of Counsel attorney. Previously, David was the founder and senior partner of the Chicago-based David A. Axelrod & Associates, P.C. He brings over 41 years of trial experience and a proven track record of winning millions of dollars in verdicts and settlements. His focus areas include medical malpractice, catastrophic injury, professional negligence, and complicated commercial disputes. David has argued cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals, the Illinois Supreme Court, and the Illinois Appellate Courts. Additionally, he has tried cases in the state and district courts of Illinois, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and California.
Over his career, David has secured over $100 million in compensation for his clients, including a record $31.35 million verdict comprised of $25 million in punitive damages in Marston v. Walgreen Company. He also secured an $11 million settlement in a failure to diagnose stroke case, a structured settlement with lifetime payments exceeding $10 million in a medical malpractice case against a major hospital, $4.6 million to the family of a woman who died after brain surgery, a $5.8 million verdict in favor of a woman who suffered foot drop after knee replacement surgery, a $3.5 million verdict in favor of a man whose wife bled to death after surgery, and millions in complicated commercial litigation.
In addition to his trial work, David contributes to the legal community in roles such as a Board Manager of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association. David also holds memberships in the American Association for Justice (Commercial Litigation and Professional Negligence Sections), the Illinois State Bar Association, and the Chicago Bar Association. He is a founding fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. As a frequent presenter on legal topics, he shares his insights with organizations like the Litigation Counsel of America and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, and he has co-authored articles on punitive damages and toxic torts.
David’s expertise and dedication have earned him numerous accolades, including being named a Top 100 Trial Lawyer by the American Association for Justice, an Illinois Super Lawyer®, and an Illinois Leading Lawyer. He has received the Martindale-Hubbel AV Preeminent rating each year since 1993
