Coplan + Crane Secures $33 Million Settlement in Illinois Railroad Fatality Case

February 26, 2026

Coplan + Crane has secured a $33 million total settlement on behalf of the family of a 29-year-old man who tragically lost his life on an Illinois railroad as a result of a dangerous maneuver called a “blind shove,” where a train backs up while no personnel are present to monitor and ensure that the train does not reverse into any obstructions.

The settlement underscores the severe consequences of unsafe railroad operations and the significant risks posed by improper maneuvers. It stands as a stark reminder of the critical importance of strict safety practices in preventing tragedies like this.

The trial team included Steven Groves and Caroline Alexander of Groves Powers and Coplan + Crane partners Ben Crane and Ervin Nevitt. Together, the team worked to achieve this meaningful outcome.

“We have secured a $33 million total settlement on behalf of a man whose life was tragically lost due to a dangerous maneuver conducted on an Illinois railroad,” Ben explained in a statement. “While nothing can replace the life that was lost, this settlement holds those responsible accountable and reinforces the importance of safety on our railroads.”

Beyond the financial recovery, this outcome offered a measure of justice for the family, and we are proud to have represented them throughout this process.
