CHICAGO, IL – Today, the family of Anabelle Hauter has filed a lawsuit against Insight Psychological Centers, and the Chicago Psychological Health & Wellness Corp. for their role in her mental health treatment, during which she was sexually abused by her therapist, Matthew D. Rounds, over a period of several years. The lawsuit, filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County, seeks justice for the emotional damages Anabelle suffered, which ultimately led to her tragic death by suicide on July 24, 2024, at just 21 years old.
Anabelle Hauter, a minor at the time of the abuse, began receiving mental health treatment at Insight Chicago on August 15, 2016. During her time under the care of Matthew D. Rounds, who was a clinical psychology intern, the therapeutic relationship turned abusive. Rounds sexually assaulted Anabelle, taking advantage of the trust she placed in him as her therapist. Despite the therapeutic relationship ending in 2020, Rounds continued to engage in inappropriate sexual encounters with Anabelle and other girls. Tragically, the trauma from these assaults contributed to Anabelle’s emotional distress and eventual suicide.
“Insight and Chicago Psychological failed in their duty to protect Anabelle from a predator in their employ,” said Ervin Nevitt, partner at Coplan + Crane, who represents Anabelle’s family in this lawsuit. “They had the responsibility to ensure their therapists were properly trained, supervised, and vetted. Anabelle was left vulnerable under the care of someone they should have trusted, and it cost her life. We are committed to holding those responsible for this tragedy fully accountable.”
